Lt. Governor Garamendi’s Fourth of july message

SACRAMENTO, CA – California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi issued the following statement today in commemoration of Independence Day:

“Today, July 4th, we celebrate our nation's 232nd birthday. In 1776, our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming America's freedom to the world. We have much for which to be thankful and many to thank.

"As we embark upon our celebrations, it is with gratitude toward the working families that built our nation and those that risk everything to keep us safe.

“Today, let us pause to remember the sacrifices of those in our armed services all over the world, especially those who have paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. We owe them and their families a great debt of gratitude.

“Let us also take the time to acknowledge the firefighters and all public safety officials who have been working to keep Californians and their homes safe from the many wildfires spread across our state.  Their work never pauses for a holiday and their tireless dedication to protecting our state never wavers.

"This 4th of July we honor all those who have been called to serve us and those who have made our great state and nation what it is today."

LT. GOVERNOR GARAMENDI ISSUES STATEMENT ON THE 36TH ANNIVERSARY OF TITLE IX

SACRAMENTO, CA
– California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi issued the following statement today on the thirty-sixth anniversary of Title IX.:

“As the father of five marvelous daughters, as the husband of a terrific and accomplished wife, and as someone who has spent more than thirty years trying to create progressive and innovative public policy, I see the great contributions talented women make in every aspect of California’s government, economy, and society.  It is hard to think that just 36 years ago, millions of American women faced sometimes insurmountable obstacles in attaining the education they deserved and participating fully in our nation’s intellectual and economic growth.

LT. GOV. GARAMENDI QUESTIONS TOLL ROAD AGENCY PARTICIPATION IN SECRET MEETINGS WITH FEDERAL GOVT. AGENCIES

Foothill South Toll Road Opponents Raise Concerns About an Open, Transparent Public Process

LOS ANGELES – Citing serious concerns about the  “extreme secrecy” surrounding the Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) participation in a key federal interagency committee (formally known as the South Orange County Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Project – SOCTIIP – Collaborative), Lt. Governor John Garamendi sent a strongly worded letter to Jane Luxton, general counsel at the Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration requesting a more open, public process.

One of the main functions of the federal committee is to coordinate federal agency evaluation of alternatives to the Toll Road proposed to go through the Donna O’Neill Conservancy and San Onofre State Beach Park.  As such, this important committee is in a position to determine whether or not new information regarding alternative is objectively considered.

In this June 11, 2008, letter, Lt. Gov. Garamendi stated, “My concern is that these deliberations, so critical to your [NOAA and the Dept. of Commerce’s] final analysis, are being finalized in an environment where ONLY the project applicant examines, presents, evaluates and comments upon evidence.  There is no opportunity for the public to participate in or even witness discussions and deliberations.”
