Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom Sends Letter to CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and Chairman Herb Carter Requesting to Place Support Budget and Tuition Increases Back on Agenda

11-16-2011

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom today sent the following letter to CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and Chairman Herb Carter requesting that the 2012-2014 support budget and the 2012-2013 tuition increases be placed back on the agenda for the Board meeting scheduled on December 5, 2011:

Full text of the letter is below:

November 18, 2011

Chancellor Charles B. Reed

Long Beach, CA 90802-4210

Chairman Herb Carter
401 Golden Shore
Long Beach, CA 90802-4210

Chancellor Reed and Trustee Carter,

Due to the alarming manner in which the decision was made to approve the 2012-2014 support budget and the 2012-2013 tuition increases and given that there were 9 members of the California State University (CSU) Board not in attendance during this vote, I respectfully request that you place these two items back on the agenda for the meeting scheduled on December 5, 2011.

While I understand the CSU leadership's concerns regarding public safety, the spirit of open deliberations has been marred by the events of November 16, 2011. This issue is simply too important to not allow for a full and thorough discussion. Otherwise, we contribute to the perception that this process is anything less than open and transparent.

Therefore, placing these two items back on the December 5 agenda would allow the full Board to hold an open debate, with full public comment and members of the media present, so that the people of California can be confident that these decisions are being made in the open and decision-makers — myself included — are being held to account.

By allowing the November 16, 2011 Board actions to stand, I fear we are unintentionally inflaming the widespread confusion and acrimony that continues to build around the issue.

I look forward to your timely reply.

Sincerely,

GAVIN NEWSOM
