Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom’s Statement on Federal Judge’s Decision Regarding Proposition 8

Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom today issued the following statement on Chief U.S. District Judge James Ware’s decision to uphold Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling regarding California’s Proposition 8:

“Today’s decision by Chief U.S. District Judge James Ware is another victory for the thousands of California couples, their families and friends who share the belief that the freedom to marry is a constitutional right for all Americans.

“From the beginning, I have strongly agreed with Judge Walker’s well reasoned decision in August 2010, that the right to marry deserves equal protection under the law as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. Thanks to groups like the American Foundation for Equal Rights, California continues toward achieving full marriage equality.

“The frivolous appeals of those who are pushing for and defending government sanctioned discrimination have been unequivocally shut down in court today.

“I look forward to the day when the struggle for equality is over and the dream becomes reality.”
